HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

The United Way strives to advance the common good by involving all members of the community in activities, events and initiatives that promote the social, cultural, educational, environmental and economic well-being of our region. For further information on how the United Way can assist you in contributing to healthy communities, contact Alan Robichaud at 524-6864, ext. 2.

It is our belief that healthy communities are those which make room at the table for all of its citizens regardless of age, abilities and status based on the following core values:

  • every individual is a prospective asset in solving challenges to the common good of all;
  • trust and respect come through knowing, understanding and valuing the diversity of customs, ideas and beliefs throughout our communities;
  • agencies and organizations are essential partners in meeting people's needs and provide opportunities to involve their constituents in the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs;
  • Debbie Lives United at the Senior Centerbarrier-free communities promote inclusion, participation and responsibility;
  • healthy communities promote healthy families and healthy children;
  • healthy communities are supported by vibrant economies;
  • healthy communities are environmentally friendly and safe for all;
  • healthy communities promote excellence in education and life-long learning opportunities;
  • sound public policies are those that promote healthy communities.

2-1-1 NH

2-1-1NH

2-1-1 is an easy to remember phone number that people can dial to connect to health and human services. By dialing 2-1-1 people will be connected with a trained information and referral specialist who can provide them with the information they need to get help or give help. 2-1-1 can be used for every-day needs or in a time of crisis.

2-1-1 is a United Way Ways of New Hampshire initiative, delivered to you in partnership with The State of New Hampshire and Public Service of New Hampshire. The initiative is also supported in part by Exeter Hospital, Citizens Bank, The Endowment for Health and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

The UpStreamer

As part of our effort to advance the common good, the Lakes Region United Way created and launched The UpStreamer, an electronic newsletter designed to heighten awareness of social services and events in the Lakes Region communities.

The free e-newsletter features several sections: non-profit events, parenting education events, volunteer and non-profit job opportunities, a community bulletin board, and a 'swap shop' where non-profits can post their wish lists, or folks can post useful but gently used items to donate. A click on any of the section headlines brings you to various pages on the Granite United Way's Lakes Region web site to view the full listings under each category.

The UpStreamer currently goes out to an audience of over 3000 email addresses, and is free to all who would like to subscribe. Click on "Sign Up For Our Newsletter" to the right to add your email address to the list. A copy of the newsletter is also posted here and remains there until it is updated the following week.

Non-profits who would like to submit event listings or wish-lists, or any who would like to submit community commentary are welcome to send their information to info@upstream.org.

NH County Health Rankings

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute are pleased to present the 2010 County Health Rankings, a collection of 50 reports that reflect the overall health of counties in every state across the country. For the first time, counties can get a snapshot of how healthy their residents are by comparing their overall health and the factors that influence their health, with other counties in their state. This will allow them to see county-to-county where they are doing well and where they need to improve. Everyone has a stake in community health. We all need to work together to find solutions. The County Health Rankings serve as both a call to action and a needed tool in this effort. Download the County Health Rankings Report for New Hampshire.
