How We Help

We recognize that Lakes Region offers most of the services residents may require to survive in our society, but we also recognize that the manner of delivery remains to certain degrees fragmented. To advance the common good by addressing societal issues, we need to re-think how we interact with and influence the social service sector of the Lakes Region. For years, funders including LRUW have encouraged isolated approaches to community problems through funding practices, instead of encouraging collaboration among those of us working to solve those problems. In order to advance the common good, we must find common goals the community can work towards. This approach has the greatest likelihood of maximizing the value of our donor's dollar. The key to this is committed leadership and committed partnership within each of our investment areas.

To achieve this would take an unprecedented level of cooperation among a variety of interests in the community. There could be no more important function of this United Way than to work diligently to make this model work for the Lakes Region.

We have identified three key areas of social investment here in the Lakes Region. These initiatives involve both proactive and reactive investment, but our goal remains the same: move the needle forward in all three of these areas. Education, Income and Healthy Communities make up the focus of our investment work, and we urge you to click onto each one to learn more about the strategies we are employing to produce results.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

From January until tax day, the Lakes Region Financial Stability Partnership's VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program offers free tax help to low- and moderate-income individuals who may qualify for the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit). In 2004, it was estimated that 17 percent of U.S. taxpayers received the EITC for a total of $40 billion. EITC filers who paid commercial tax preparers to prepare their tax returns spent nearly $3 billion in fees. The local VITA site offers people free tax preparation assistance--allowing them to hold on to more of their EITC dollars rather than paying a third party to prepare their taxes. Many of the partners involved in the local VITA site are also able to provide information on important matters such as building savings, budgeting, or using credit wisely – a true benefit to the whole community.
